SummaryStudents who are identified with acute or chronic health conditions and are demonstrating difficulty with academic progress linked to their health condition need to be considered for special education and evaluation services. Each student needs a comprehensive assesssment to determine their educational needs and their eligibility for special education services under OHD or other special education categories. Once the student’s needs have been identified and it is determined that the student qualifies for special education services, the team meets to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that guides the services provided to the student. Services may include assistive technology and other services such as general education with adaptations to the classroom and instruction, or other special educational services. The paraprofessional plays a key role in the planning and implementation of services. Paraprofessionals are often called upon to gather assessment data and provide suggestions for modifications to the classroom or instructions as part of this process. Therefore, it is important for the paraprofessional to get to know the student whom he/she supports, understand the student’s educational and health needs, and be familiar with the student’s IEP.
