Lesson 4: Understanding Other Health Disabilities

Facilitated Activity/Discussion Ideas

  1. From the Fact Sheets included in this unit, you should focus on these three medical conditions: Asthma, ADHD, and Seizures. You are to choose an actual student that you work with who has one of these three health conditions. Refer to the appropriate Fact Sheet.
  2. Identify symptoms that you see this specific student exhibiting in the classroom. Write these on the Worksheet and discuss them with the facilitator.
  3. Identify education implications or the interfering behaviors that occur in the classroom for this specific child that you work with. Write these on the Worksheet and discuss them with the facilitator.
  4. Identify and implement two (2) instructional strategies/accommodations to address these educational implications. Write these on the Worksheet.
  5. Develop a “linkage statement” that ties the medical diagnosis to the presenting problem in the classroom. Enter this on the Worksheet.

NOTE TO THE FACILITATOR: For correction Rubric, refer to the Fact Sheets. If the paraprofessional does not work with a student with one of these three diagnoses, they should pick a student with a different medical condition for which there is a Fact Sheet.
