Eligibility for Special Education under the OHD category
Not all students with health conditions need special education services. If the health condition is well-managed and the student is making good academic progress, then special education is not needed.
Students may qualify for special education under the OHD category when their health condition impacts their ability to function and learn at school. It is important for you to understand how a health condition can contribute to a student’s learning challenges compared to other students. The student’s learning challenges must have a link to the health condition in order to qualify for special education services under the OHD category. Here is a list of ways a student might qualify:
- The student is frequently absent from school for hospitalizations and specialized treatments.
- The student misses class time, assignments, and activities because he/she requires treatments during school time, and he/she is not able to complete assignments
- Limited strength, lack of endurance, pain, and/or fatigue due to the student’s health condition interferes with the student’s ability to attend or participate in classroom activities and complete assignments.
- Distractibility and impulsivity interfere with the student’s ability to focus, participate, and/or complete classroom activities or assignments.
