1. Jenny and Nick are playing with blocks on the rug. Jenny uses big blocks to build a tall tower, while Nick lines up small blocks to make a road. They play beside each other, but do not try to influence each other’s play.
2. Billy stands near the art table, where Sophie and Emma are coloring pictures together. When Emma asks Sophie what color she should use, Billy suggests orange. He does not sit down and join the girls, but watches from several feet away.
3. A group of 4-year-olds is playing on the playground one day after lunch. They pretend that the swing set is a big ship. One little girl, Annie, directs other children to take roles on the ship. They steer the ship and look out for storms, and the children talk together about where the ship is going.
