Introduction to Proactive Classroom Management

view of an art classroom with teacher at front

It is not unusual to see particular students in one class working busily on their activities, but in another class, acting out and disrupting activities. The difference? Classroom management.

Good classroom management—even in classrooms that include students with significant behavior challenges—can lead to an effective learning environment. A classroom that utilizes proactive approaches to behavior management and instructional activities can reduce the need for frequent, more individualized interventions. Clear rules and expectations, basic routines, and a trusting and respectful environment can eliminate many of the conditions that cause challenging behavior in students.

This unit addresses classroom management and covers some of the basic elements to establish an environment that supports appropriate behavior for all students in the classroom. As many educators have learned, peer modeling can have a powerful influence on behavior unlike other interventions. When the classroom is supportive and united, students with challenging behaviors can thrive.
