Introduction

Working in the field of education, and specifically in special education, requires knowledge of vocabulary exclusive to this field. Establishing a common vocabulary makes communication much easier as everyone shares common words. It is helpful if words related to students, roles, and instructional activities are shared. It is also important to learn correct word usage for working with individuals with disabilities. It is essential to use "person first" language.

Objectives

As you read the objectives for this unit, think about and rate your current knowledge using the following scale.

  1. I do not understand this.
  2. I do understand this.

  • Learn what a common vocabulary is and why it is important.
