Introduction

The paraprofessional works under the direct guidance of a teacher or other licensed professional. Depending on where you work, this person may be a special education teacher, a regular education teacher, a registered nurse, an occupational therapist, or some other licensed personnel. Sometimes you may even have more than one licensed personnel directing your work for different students or situations. The licensed professional gives you instructions and jobs to complete. Each of you brings different expertise to a classroom situation. The teacher has certain types of information about learning styles and learning needs of the students. You can assist the teacher in maximizing the learning of all students by giving each student more instructional time. Together, you can combine your knowledge to make the classroom more conducive to the learning of all students.
