Lesson 3 Reinforcement: Zero Tolerance Discussion

Additional Suggestions

  1. Discuss good examples of behavior management strategies that you have observed. What makes a behavior management strategy effective? Why? What are some of the challenges to implementing an effective behavior management plan?
  2. Discuss the three types of behavioral interventions.
  3. The teacher is using time-out with a student to reprimand him for his talking out behavior. You know that this procedure hasn't been discussed by the team and is definitely not written into his Individual Education Plan (IEP). What do you do?
  4. The following "zero tolerance" cases are actual examples that have been challenged in the courts. Use these examples (or others that you have heard of) to facilitate a discussion about zero tolerance policies.
    • A kindergartener brings a butter knife to school in her lunchbox. She is suspended for 10 days under the zero tolerance policy.
    • A 12th grade honors student is expelled from school for one year because a butter knife is inadvertently left in the back of his pick-up truck after he hauled some of his grandmother's miscellaneous items to Goodwill over the weekend.
    • Two second-graders are suspended from school for five days after they get into a friendly wrestling match on the playground during recess.

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
