Introduction

Paraprofessionals and teachers each have unique instructional responsibilities. It is important to distinguish who is doing what job in the classroom. This unit provides you with examples of the different responsibilities of the teacher and the paraprofessional. Many times, the paraprofessional helps to prepare for the instruction by reading, supervising, directing, observing, and actually preparing materials. Another step in the instructional process is to evaluate the instruction after it has occurred. You can evaluate your performance and also the student's performance. This regular evaluation is important to see what works and what may need a bit more help. Several examples of the evaluative process will be presented in this unit.

Objectives

As you read the objectives for this unit, think about and rate your current knowledge using the following scale.

  1. I do not understand this.
  2. I do understand this.
  3. I understand this well enough to use in my work.
  4. I could teach others about it and use it in my work.

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Distinguish between teachers' responsibilities and paraprofessionals' responsibilities.
  • Learn how to prepare for instruction.
  • Gain knowledge about evaluating instruction.
  • Demonstrate self-evaluation in relation to instructional practices.
