Facilitated Activities

  1. Encourage the members of your learning group to complete the ÏMonitor How Instructional Time Is UsedÓ activity in Lesson 1 with the teacher with whom they work most closely. Facilitate a discussion after they have completed this activity with a focus on what went well and how they can improve their skills in this area. Be ready to offer concrete steps and training resources that will address their needs.
  2. Encourage the members in your learning group to observe at least two teachers in their school during an instructional session. Instruct them to pay particular attention to the techniques that the teachers use to use to try to establish and maintain attention and then answer the following questions. Discuss their observation as a group (either online or face-to-face). Print a worksheet for this activity.
    • Which techniques were used?
    • Which techniques are effective?
    • Which techniques are not effective?
    • Are there techniques which seem to work better in different situations (i.e.: large groups, small groups?) Explain why?
  3. Lesson 6 Reinforcement asks paraprofessionals to think about what works well in different groups, what doesnÌt work, and suggest what they would do differently the next time. Facilitate a discussion about this topic. Be ready to share practical tips, suggestions, and additional resources for managing groups effectively.

Discussion Ideas

Lessons 5 and 6 discuss a variety of ways that groups can be organized. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Discuss with your learning group each type of group, and the benefits and challenges of each type of grouping.

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
