Discussion and reflection questions

A facilitator may hold an in-class or online discussion, or participants may write on the topics and share in a chat room with each other.

  • Discuss what it means to be objective in one's observations. Emphasize, in particular, that reported behaviors should be both observable and measurable. If you have time, ask the participants to generate some behavioral scenarios and then report the scenarios in both an appropriate and inappropriate fashion. Scenarios can also be posted on the bulletin board and students can add comments on how to improve the recording. A revised version can then be posted.
  • Discuss why collecting data is important? Discuss specific techniques and tools that will be used in your district. In a partner situation, have students practice an interview or observation with an actual tool that is used locally. Have pairs switch so that both get a chance to practice observation and recording. Review students writing and assist in making necessary revisions.
  • Discuss what happens when inter-rater reliability is challenged. Talk about a situation in which two different observers might observe the same event but record and report the event very differently? Taking it one step further, how different decisions might be made or different goals might be set depending on which records or methods were used for observation?

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
