Facilitator Supplement

Many of the sections in this unit have an interview activity. Participants may want to read through the entire unit first and then conduct one interview of a staff member at their worksite. All of the interview questions are provided on one printable form and may be used as a framework for further discussion or activities and then filed in the paraprofessional portfolio. Completion of the interview may also serve as a final review for completion of this unit.

Worksheets in this Unit

All worksheets are Adobe pdf files. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print the worksheets.

Activities

  1. Paraprofessional involvement in the assessment process will vary according to local practice and job assignment. Provide participants with one (or more) of the tools that are used in your setting or that they may come into contact with. Role-play during class or in a facilitated online forum using the tool you have selected. Facilitate a discussion among participants after they have completed the questionnaire. Focus on the various tools that your district may use and the role of the paraprofessional during the assessment process.
  2. Write each of the three types of assessment—standardized tests, behavioral checklists, and observation (functional assessment)—on the board or in an online format. Ask the paraprofessionals to name some advantages and disadvantages of each assessment approach. As they list them, write them below the appropriate group. When you feel you have generated enough input from the class, have a short discussion about how the different methods will give information that can then be used for planning with students with disabilities.

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
