Introduction

The environment in which your students grow up has a profound influence on how they perform. How teachers, family, and community respond to a student's disability will affect both the opportunities that are offered to the student and the way the student perceives their disability. These environmental factors can work in favor of student improvement or against student improvement. In this unit we will explore some of the environmental factors that influence students and some things that we can do to improve the educational environment in which a student learns.

Objectives

As you read the objectives for this unit, think about and rate your current knowledge using the following scale.

  1. I do not understand this.
  2. I do understand this.
  3. I understand this well enough to use in my work.
  4. I could teach others about it and use it in my work.

Upon completion of this unit, you will:

  • Develop a greater understanding of how the cultural background and environment of children influences their particular needs.
  • Know of some steps you can take to improve the student environment.
