Discussion Ideas

The following articles may provide a good starting point for discussions within your learning group.

Case study scenarios and discussion: present a case study and identify which plan would be appropriate for the individual.

  1. In this unit paraprofessionals are asked to think about factors that influenced their lives. The facilitator can ask students to discuss particular pivotal events in their lives that changed the course of their direction and how they respond to their environment. These events may be positive or negative. Why were these events pivotal? Is it surprising the effect that these events had?
  2. In this unit paraprofessionals are also asked to reflect on “Bias” and how bias can shape perception and the opportunities that are perception provides. The facilitator can ask students to discuss the role of bias in their own lives. Are they aware of particular biases that played a role in their lives? What are they? Also, do they see bias at play at school? Do particular biases influence how people respond to students they work with and the opportunities that are give to these students?

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
