Facilitated Activity

Activities included in this section are only those activities that will be led by the facilitator. Other activities can be found in the lessons.

  1. Sibling Descriptions of Brother or Sister With Disabilities

Discussion Ideas

The following articles may provide a good starting point for discussions within your learning group.

  1. The activity for Lesson 1 asks paraprofessionals to read writings that describe what it is like to live with a brother or sister with a disability. Students are asked to identify particular challenges that these children write about, as well as relationships that are particularly special. Ask your students to discuss what they found in these readings and, in particular, what they found regarding the child's school experience.
  2. The facilitator could also ask paraprofessionals to talk about observations they have had on the job that relate to the struggles or successes that students experience as a result of a disability or as a result of their relationship with someone who has a disability. How does this affect the paraprofessional and how they work with students, etc.?

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
