  1. Activity for Erikson's Eight Stages
  2. Activity for Developmental Stages of Children (Students)

Discussion Ideas

The following articles may provide a good starting point for discussions within your learning group.

  1. Discussion between facilitator and students: How can theories and knowledge of human development help paraprofessionals do their job better? How?
  2. Discuss Activity 1 on Erikson's Eight Stages. In this activity paraprofessionals reflected on their own development within the Erikson's eight stages of social/emotional development. What did they find? Was it easy to for them to determine whether or not they had mastered or "resolved" a stage? Did they find that they had resolved some of the more advanced stages and not some of the earlier ones? Did they find that they resolved some of a stage well and other parts of the same stage not so well? If so, what does this mean about the theory behind the framework?
  3. Discuss Activity 2 on Developmental Stages of Children (Students). In this activity paraprofessionals thought about one student and compared what they new about this student with the development levels described on a human development chart. Did they find that the student was at the same age level across the "physical," "social," "language," "cognitive" domains that were charted? If not, what did they find and what does this tell them about the student? Also, how might this knowledge affect their teaching the student?

  •  Consider using a tracking worksheet for Paraprofessionals to monitor their progress through the units.
  •  For information on how to start an online discussion area, see the online resources section.
