Creating a Job Description

The teacher and administrator will have certain professional and role-oriented expectations of the paraprofessional. Therefore, specifying what is expected by the teacher and the administrator of someone assuming the role of paraprofessional is needed. As a team, it is important to begin this process before, or immediately upon starting a new assignment. The paraprofessional's own expectations and goals are also important areas to discuss.

Job descriptions for the paraprofessional may exist at more than one level: the district, the building, and the classroom levels. Working together as a team to generate a job description, both general to the building and specific to the classroom, is an important first step in clearly identifying roles and responsibilities.
